Porta di Santa Croce (Tre Archi)

La porta di Santa Croce prende il nome della vicina chiesa di Santa Croce, oggi San Giuseppe. E’ conosciuta come Tre Archi e adiacente all’Arco dei Funari (XIII sec.).il cui nome deriva dal mestiere dei fabbricatori di corde.

La nuova porta, e la via che l’attraversa, furono aperte durante la ristrutturazione viaria del 1857, su progetto dell’architetto Giovanni Santini. Ha avuto anche la funzione di barriera daziaria e all’esterno, incassata nel suolo, era la bascula per la pesatura delle merci. All’interno si sviluppa un breve porticato con colonne in stile dorico (XIX sec.).

The Porta di Santa Croce (Santa Croce Gate) takes its name from the nearby church of Santa Croce, now San Giuseppe. It is known as Tre Archi (Three Arches) and is adjacent to the Arco dei Funari (13th century), whose name derives from the trade of rope makers.
The new gate, and the road that passes through it, were opened during the road renovation of 1857, designed by architect Giovanni Santini. It also served as a customs barrier, and on the outside, sunk into the ground, was the scale for weighing goods. Inside, there is a short portico with Doric columns (19th century).
