Arco dello Sperandio

La porta appartiene alla cinta medievale e presenta sopra l’arco un’iscrizione in caratteri gotici che ne ricorda il restauro del 1329. Nel XIX secolo fu chiusa per motivi daziari e riaperta nel 1931.

Come la via, prende il nome dalla presenza nelle vicinanze di un monastero benedettino femminile, chiamato dello Sperandio, a causa dell'iscrizione "Spera in Deo 1696" posta sopra il portone d'accesso e ancora oggi visibile. Il monastero, trasformato in villa nel 1799, sorgeva su un una necropoli etrusca in uso dal VI al III sec. a.C., come testimonia il ritrovamento di un ipogeo etrusco nel 1900. L’area è oggi proprietà privata. 

The gate is part of the medieval wall and features an inscription in Gothic characters above the arch commemorating its restoration in 1329. It was closed in the 19th century for toll reasons and reopened in 1931.
Like the street, it takes its name from the nearby presence of a Benedictine convent, known as Sperandio, due to the inscription "Spera in Deo 1696" above the entrance door, which is still visible today. The monastery, transformed into a villa in 1799, stood on an Etruscan necropolis in use from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, as evidenced by the discovery of an Etruscan hypogeum in 1900. The area is now privately owned.
