Porta Sant'Antonio

Come l’omonimo Borgo prende il nome dalla chiesa di S. Antonio Abbate. Fu aperta nel 1374 sull’ estremità della poderosa fortezza papale di Porta Sole, commissionata dall’Abate di Monmaggiore su progetto di Matteo di Gattapone nel 1373 e distrutta dai perugini nel 1424).

Sostituisce la precedente porta del 1273 attinente alle mura medievali. Le poderose mura esterne in mattoni , sul versante est, risalgono alla ristrutturazione del 1519. Da questa porta, come testimonia la lapide apposta sopra l'arco, nel 1859 entrarono le truppe dell’esercito sabaudo dei Bersaglieri, da cui l’attuale nome della via adiacente che precedentemente si chiamava via Sant'Antonio.

St. Anthony's Gate
Like the village of the same name, it takes its name from the church of Sant'Antonio Abbate. It was opened in 1374 at the edge of the mighty papal fortress of Porta Sole, commissioned by the Abbot of Monmaggiore based on a design by Matteo di Gattapone in 1373 and destroyed by the Perugians in 1424.
It replaced the previous gate from 1273, part of the medieval walls. The mighty external brick walls on the eastern side date back to the renovation of 1519. Through this gate, as attested by the plaque above the arch, the troops of the Savoy Bersaglieri army entered in 1859, hence the current name of the adjacent street, which was previously called Via Sant'Antonio.
